A Long Way Up, the Finale

A teenage girl finds herself in the Afterlife following a tragic accident involving her and her twin sister. When her Afterlife guide uncovers a terrible mistake, the girl must make an impossible decision.

To start from the beginning, go here.

The ride in the elevator is nerve-wracking. I’m scared, unsure of what will happen, what I’ll find. A moment ago, I was sure I was doing the right thing. But now I think I might be making the biggest mistake of my life. Of Amber’s life. I wonder if I’ll ever know.

There is a sudden lurch, a whoosh, and I see her! I see Amber! We reach for each other, two stars passing in the night.

“I love you!” she says. “It wasn’t your fault.”

We’re still reaching, growing farther apart. I have so many things I want to say, but all I can manage is, “It’s a long way up, Amber!”

And then she’s gone and I’m home, and my sob is one of relief and love and hope.
